The technological power that governs much of the world today did not appear suddenly. It resulted from several generations of companies that successively transformed computers, data, communications, and consumption. Each stage produced new leaders while leaving behind corporations that failed to understand the changes they had helped create. We are now entering a more profound phase because technology is no longer merely processing information but beginning to make decisions for us. IBM was one of the great architects of modern computing and dominated the corporate computer market for decades.

Its technical knowledge, research, and enormous machines enabled governments, banks, and major corporations to automate their operations. However, the company focused heavily on mainframe systems and underestimated the future importance of personal computers. IBM helped open a historic door, but other companies ultimately controlled the road that emerged beyond it. When IBM introduced its personal computer, it entrusted essential components to outside companies such as Microsoft and Intel.

That decision accelerated the market’s expansion while allowing the operating system and processor to become independent platforms. Microsoft eventually dominated the software running on millions of computers, while Intel established an architecture used across several generations. The lesson was unmistakable: creating or advancing a technology does not guarantee continued economic control over it. Oracle understood early that the true value of computers also resided in organizing information.

The company transformed relational databases into essential tools for governments, banks, airlines, and major corporations. Its success helped establish the principle that whoever manages data occupies a privileged position within the economy. Oracle did not invent this entire revolution by itself, but it played a decisive role in turning it into a powerful global industry. Apple later transformed the relationship between people and technology by designing products as complete systems. The company integrated devices, software, services, and processors into an experience controlled through its own ecosystem.

Its phones and computers demonstrated that design can be just as strategically important as manufacturing components. Apple does not need to produce every chip directly to exert enormous influence over the technological architecture of the market. Samsung represents another dimension of power because it participates simultaneously in phones, displays, memory, processors, and advanced manufacturing. This integration allows it to compete with Apple in consumer devices while collaborating with numerous companies throughout the industrial chain.

South Korea consequently became a crucial part of an economy dependent on highly specialized components. Samsung demonstrates that technological power also belongs to those possessing the physical capacity to manufacture what others design. Google took a different step by organizing the immense amount of information available across the internet. Its search engine transformed human curiosity, attention, and intentions into one of history’s most profitable advertising businesses. It later extended its influence through Android, YouTube, Maps, Gmail, Chrome, cloud computing, and its own artificial intelligence processors.

Oracle organized corporate data, but Google learned how to monetize information and human intent on a global scale. Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Oracle subsequently moved much of the economy into enormous data centers connected through the cloud. Nvidia and other companies supplied the processors capable of running the new artificial intelligence models. TSMC and Samsung assumed a decisive role in manufacturing, while specialized companies provided machinery, memory, and design software. No single power controls the entire chain, although some retain considerably greater influence over its strategic points.

The United States continues to occupy the central position because it concentrates much of the design, software, intellectual property, financing, and digital platforms. It can also impose restrictions through licenses, sanctions, export controls, and agreements with allied countries. Nevertheless, its leadership depends on Asian factories, foreign minerals, and supply chains distributed across numerous territories. American technological power remains extraordinary, but it operates within a global structure that cannot be replaced quickly. The arrival of artificial intelligence is once again shifting the center of that power.

We first allowed systems to search for information and then accepted their ability to compare products, organize content, and recommend alternatives. The next step appears almost inevitable because it satisfies the human need to save time and reduce repetitive tasks. We will soon allow these systems to purchase, reserve, pay, negotiate, and choose on our behalf with increasingly limited intervention. Convenience will become the principal argument for transferring these responsibilities, but every delegation will have consequences.

A recommendation could be influenced by advertising, commissions, commercial alliances, or the platform’s own interests. If the same company answers a question, selects the available options, and completes the purchase, it becomes the intermediary between a need and its solution. At that moment, it stops competing solely for our attention and begins competing for control over our economic will.

The debate of the future will not be limited to who manufactures the most powerful chips or owns the largest data centers. The fundamental question will be who determines the recommendations people receive and the rules governing their digital assistants. Delegating certain tasks can improve our lives, but surrendering every decision could silently diminish our autonomy. When we allow artificial intelligence to choose for us, we also surrender a part of our freedom.
